WE THE PORTUGUESE (II): CONSTRUCTION OF NATIONALITY after the Christian reconquest
During the Reconquista, Portugal was repopulated mainly through the system of granting estates to the military and monastic orders. These settlers, mostly from Galicia, Leon and Asturias (there were Catalans, "franc", Flemish, German and English) formed a local feudal elite associated with the Moorish population (Christians within the system of Muslim domination) . But other populations were incorporated: the Moorish (Muslims) and Jews. These groups are important especially in the Alentejo and the Algarve, living in separate neighborhoods in cities or rural communities forming. The Algarve, the Portuguese region with deeper Islamic influence, recently was conquered by Alfonso III in 1249. Its main town, Silves, was larger than Lisbon. Many Muslim population remained there under Christian allegiance. Thus Portugal was an ethnic mosaic at the time of its independence and the real authority was severely limited by the feudal privileges of the military orders and Church. The policy of the kings Dionisio I (1279-1325), Alfonso IV (1325-1357) and Pedro I (1357-1367) tended to reinforce the central power, economically develop the country and promote national unity. His foreign policy was based on the commercial and political approach to London. The alliance with England, strengthened by the Treaty of Windsor of May 9, 1386, was essential when addressing the Castilian military aggression. One after another they were thwarted with the British military assistance. Also friendship with England paid off when starting the overseas expansion: British soldiers take part in the Portuguese city of Ceuta to the Sultanate Benimerín the August 21, 1415.The Portuguese Jewish community, member of Sephardic or Ladino culture, whose age is dated back to Roman times, was very important in economic and political development of Portugal. Many of its members occupied important positions in the court. But his situation, like that of the Mudejar communities, would be very difficult from 1496 when King Manuel I, of absolutist tendencies, ordered the forced conversion of non-Christian minorities. The result of this disastrous policy was intolerant slaughter of 4,000 Jews and Moors in Lisbon on 19 April 1506 by an angry mob. There was also forced deportation of infidels to Sao Tome and Principe. To make matters worse from 1536 established the Inquisition. Between 1540 and 1794 a total of 1175 people were executed in bonfires. Thousands of Jews fled to America, other European countries, North Africa and Turkey. Testimony of this tragic period is the formation in the twelfth century of endogenous secret community of Jews of Belmonte, who managed to maintain their traditions in complete anonymity until the twentieth century. The wave of intolerance coincides with the peak of Portuguese imperialism.Curious would be the fact that Jewish refugees in Latin American cities would be used as a form of penetration of commercial and political interests of Portugal (and its unconditional ally, England). Indeed, especially the powerful merchant community called "Portuguese" of Buenos Aires (mostly Portuguese Jews), associated with the powerful organization of the "Confederate" (who performed slave smuggling and other illegal activities) would play a role autonomists fundamental conflicts of the Buenos Aires oligarchy in the Rio de la Plata. Faced with death by his sworn enemy, Governor Hernando Arias de Saavedra, the "Portuguese" locals boycotted all attempts to start the colonization of the disputed border region between Spain and Portugal (which became known as the Eastern Band). The reasons for this boycott are in fact intended to safeguard relations with Portugal as a way to protect their not very legal business relations with that power. The systematic destruction of the Portuguese Sephardic culture also meant the virtual disappearance of the Portuguese Jewsih language in the sixteenth century. It developed over history, it was heavily influenced by judeorromance language Ladino or Judeo-Spanish. He survived among the Jews of the diaspora in other countries in Europe and America until the nineteenth century. In fact it forms the basis of current language Saramaccan Papiamento (spoken in the Netherlands Antilles) and (spoken in Suriname and French Guiana). The assimilationist policy of the absolutist regime of the Kingdom of Portugal Portuguese laid the foundations of ethnic nationalism. Its backbone was the language imposed to the full extent of the territory. It developed from the medieval Galician-Portuguese began to differentiate it from the gradual integration of Arabic influences and also English, French, Italian and Castilian. From its source in the northwestern region of the Iberian Peninsula from the Bay of Biscay to the Douro River, its imposition in the southern region of Alentejo and Algarve was the product of the process of Christian reconquest of the territories held by the Muslims. The great promoter of the formalization of the Portuguese king Dionisio I was the one who worked for the impersonation of Latin as official language in the Kingdom. However persists until today a Portuguese enclave where another language is spoken. It is the municipalities of Miranda do Douro, Vimioso, Bragança, Mogadouro and Macedo de Cavaleiros in the province of Tras-os-Montes e Alto Douro. Therein lies a descendant of settlers asturleonés source (not Galician, as in the rest of northern Portugal) brought between the twelfth and fourteenth centuries population. The three dialects called Mirandese, riodonorés and guaramilés, spoken by about 15,000 people, are an authentic relic of a lost language. Indeed leonine was practically supplanted by the Castilian Spanish lands in the late nineteenth century.

INDOEUROPEOS (I):URHEIMAT

ARTICLE IN ENGLISH (there may be errors in translation)
Indo-European (I): Urheimat

According to the most widespread hypothesis philological generally based on the work of the American Lithuanian archaeologist Marija Gimbutas (1921-1994), two eneolíticos sites in Ukraine today would be candidates for the Urheimat (original home) of protoindoeuropeas languages: Sredny Stog (4500-3500 BC) and Yamna (3600-3200 BC). Other cultures associated with these are: Novadanilovka (lower reaches of the Dnieper), Lower Mikhailovka (Lower Dnieper and the Crimea) and Kemi Oba (Crimea). It could also be part of this circuit the Ukrainian-Moldovan-Romanian culture Cucuteni-Tripilia (4500-3000 BC). These cultures derived from the preceding culture also eneolítica of Jvalynsk or Khvalynsk (5000-4500 BC), which would be the successor to the early eneolítica Samara culture (5500-4800 BC). It could also be related to contemporary culture Seroglazovo Samara. It is assumed that these cultures are related to the Mesolithic cultures of Dnieper-Donets (6000-4000 BC) and Surski-Dnepr, presumably derived from the Polish Culture Epipaleolithic Swideriense (10000-8200 BC)
In the second phase Stog Sredny Culture (4000-3500 BC) there is archaeological evidence of domestication of the horse, with stone axes and roped combat corded or ceramic elements that relate to the rear northeastern European Culture Ceramics Cordada (3000-2350 BC). It also noted the existence of a large variety of types in the skulls found in the settlements of Culture Sredny Stog. In fact it is suggested that constitute a mixed Eastern and Western European elements population. Some of these skulls resemble those found in neighboring Tripolie Cucuteni- Neolithic culture (5500-2750 BC) types, generally considered the graceful Dinaric or Mediterranean type. The others correspond to a type of Cro-Magnon, robust and large characteristic in the preceding Mesolithic Dnieper-Donets culture (6000-4000 BC). The presence of traces of Siberian and Uralic types were also found. Possibly, therefore Stog Sredny Culture is part of a mixed cultural horizon nordcaucásico confluence Balkan influences perhaps through the presence of commercial factories. That explains the male skulls found in Novadanilovka similar to those found in the Balkans physical characteristics.
The Yamna culture is not surrounded by proto-Indo-European cultures: Neolithic pottery Peine (4200-2000 BC), Kama and Kelteminar (5500-3500 BC) and copper and bronze Caucasian Maikop (3700-2500 BC) , Kura-Araxes (3500-2200 BC) and Novotitorovka (3300-2700 BC). It is assumed that the latter were influenced by the Yamna Culture and subsequent Kurgan Culture (3200-600 BC). They are characterized by the mode of semi-nomadic or nomadic life, the practice of animal husbandry, the use of horses, the use of copper and burial practices where mounds are erected and rituals practiced human sacrifice.
Possibly proto-Indo-European cultures derived from groups of Paleolithic hunter-gatherers who migrated to northeastern Europe at the end of the last glacial period. Among these groups the ancestors of today's thin-úgridos (Uralic) and Altaic groups represented in the Culture Ahremburg (11000-10000 BC) they were also. Indeed it is likely that cro-magnon bands have migrated north to dissolve the typical Magdalenian culture of the Pyrenean region, raising the Hamburguense culture (12,000-10,000 BC).
We are using here the restricted form of the name Cro-Magnon. The current trend is to use the term to refer to all the fossils of Homo sapiens of the Upper Paleolithic, regardless of sub-types. While the abuse on "raciológicas" issues has led to ignore the existence of variants such as man or man Chancellade Grimaldi, it seems unreasonable to simply ignore the specific differences observable in some fossil remains. The guy called Cro-Magnon is applied to paleo-európida robust shape, with a tendency to tall. It appears in Western Europe to the Solutrean period. Then share the cultural space Magdaleniense with smaller sub-types. At the end of the glacial period such massively migrate south through North Africa. There is known as man-Afalou Mechta (or Mechta-El-Arbi), agent of culture-Ibero-Maurisiense (17,000 / 10,120 to 8550 BC), successor of the local Aterian (38000-10000 BC). Survivors of human kind are the canaries guanches and blond Berbers of Kabylia. It is logical to assume that their Paleolithic ancestors were physically equal: blond, blue-eyed, rather tall, dolicoide skull.
Indeed it is assumed that the first Homo sapiens entered Europe at around 40,000 BC in full initial cold phase of the Würm glaciation (Würm I). Are generators of Aurignaciense (40000-30000 BC) and Perigordiense (30000-18000 BC) cultures. At least until the Châtelperronense (Initial Perigordiense), Homo sapiens coexisted with Neanderthal Man, which still prevailed in the European glacial environment. But from Gravetiense (average Perigordiense, 30000-20000 BC) a new human type enters Anatolia from Europe or somewhere in the Middle East associated with Haplogroup H (mtDNA). This mitochondrial lineage is characteristic of Mediterranean populations and reappears massively in Europe in 4800 BC with the development of the Neolithic Beaker Culture (although present from the early Neolithic in 7,450 BC). This new type of Homo sapiens moved to a Neanderthal population in retreat perhaps due to the temperate climate period known as Swing Paudorf (27000-23000 BC). At the beginning of a new cold phase of the Würm glaciation it appears in Europe, apparently also from the Middle East, other Homo sapiens associated with the Solutrean culture (22000-15000 BC). This is a very large and robust manner, which contributes U mtDNA lineage and DNA haplogroup R-Y. It is the Cro-Magnon.
The temperate climate oscillations or Bølling Boling calls (14650-14100 BC) and Allerød (14,100 to 12,900 BC), followed by the last cold period known as the Younger Dryas (12900-11600 BC) destabilized the Paleolithic Magdalenian culture (17,000 to 10,000 BC) during which they had entered new types Homo sapiens from the Middle East or the Caucasus, ancestors of the current Basque towns and fine-úgridos.
It is therefore reasonable to infer that a population of western cromagnoides emigrated from Western Europe in the late Upper Paleolithic is the foundation of the proto-Indo-European population of Eastern Europe. But other hypotheses argue that such emigration occurred from the Altai region in Central Asia.

ARTICLE IN ENGLISH
Portugal is a relatively small country in Europe, and certainly that is one of the smallest in the world. Nor it has a too large population. But his impact on history is relatively astonishing if you consider the above exposed. Is that Portugal came to carve up the world in a famous lawsuit with Spain ... It is not that half the world did not even notice. Portugal actually came to extend their influence directly and indirectly by way world. Besides his style of colonial power would be the inspiration for the colonizing power pattern that happened in the domain of half the world: Britain.Who are these Portuguese? Today maybe a little underrated in Europe very hegemonized by Germany and France (we could add to Britain as third power) actually integrates the sector called, in English, PIGS (Portugal, Ireland, Greece and Spain) those countries considered as second (or fourth) in the European Union.A testament to the importance of Portugal in the world to give those countries with Portuguese as an official language, besides Portuguese course same State. They are: Brazil, Angola, Mozambique, Guinea Bissau, Cape Verde, Sao Tome and Principe and East Timor. But it also speaks Portuguese and variants thereof in Macao (China), Goa (India), Sri Lanka, Equatorial Guinea, Uruguay, Bermuda, Argentina, Venezuela, Canada, USA, South Africa, France, Namibia, Japan, Argentina, Paraguay, Surinam, Guyana, Colombia, Netherlands Antilles, Switzerland, Luxembourg and Andorra. The country with the largest number of descendants of Portuguese in proportion to the rest of the population is undoubtedly Brazil (over 25 million). Perhaps the second would be Uruguay, a country that in its pre and protoestatal stage, became occupied by Portugal and then Brazil. In its beginnings as an independent state something like a third of the Uruguayan national population it was Portuguese and Portuguese-Brazilian origin (among them are the ancestors of the author of this blog). To answer the question of who the Portuguese have to go back very back in time. Indeed the Portuguese are the descendants majority and basically ancient Celts: Lusitanian, conios and oppidanos túrdulos. That is, biological and cultural mix between the Iberians and the Celts. As descendants of Iberian ancestry goes back to the indigenous population of the Iberian Peninsula settled there since the last period of Paleolithic: the Magdalenian. As descendants of Celtic history is linked with that of the invading war bands that arrived in the region around 600 BC and they founded headquarters dominating the local people. Is however necessary to clarify that, by all indications, the language spoken by the ancient Lusitanian and conios Celtic language would not be root but would be closely related to the Italic languages. This means that this language would have been imposed by an Indo-European people who came to the region before the Celts. Nevertheless, the Portuguese themselves later fell under the influence of the Celts or Galician whose heartland is in the current Galicia, Cantabria, Asturias, León and Northern Portugal. The local population was submitted some time by the Carthaginians (236-218 BC); but then came the Romans, who turned the region of present Portugal and neighboring areas (now part of Spain) in the province of Hispania Lusitania. Actually the Romans began their conquest of Lusitania only towards 190 BC, once defeated the Carthaginians after the terrible Second Punic War (218-201 BC) and after finishing the Iberian Revueltas (197-195 BC). But the Portuguese were raised against the Roman power and resisted a long time (between 155 and 139 BC, the year of the murder of rebel leader Viriato) in the Lusitanian wars. However the Portuguese resistance was not overcome until 60 BC after a brutal campaign of two years carried out by the propretor Julius Caesar in front of 20 cohorts (10,000 men) and 5,000 reservists. After these campaigns Rome could address the task of administering the territory, incorporating the locals to their civilization. Olisipo cities (Lisbon), Bracara Augusta (Braga) and Portus Cale (Oporto) were populated mainly by Italian colonists. The Roman era came to an end in 409, arrived in the region when the asdingos Vandals, Alans and Swabians who occupied the Lusitania as federated in Rome. After a conflict that lasted from 419-429 the Swabians, with Roman help, expelled Vandals and Alans creating their own kingdom. The Swabians were a minority of no more than 25,000 people at a local population of some 700,000 souls. His mission was to subdue the foederati Galician-Lusitanian aristocrats and repress peasant revolts (bagaudas) on behalf of Imperio.Sin But his kingdom was eventually occupied by imperial troops visigodas with support in the year 456. In 468 the Swabians, allies with the local aristocracy expelled the Visigoths. During this period of independence (468-585) settlement occurs Breton immigrants off the coast of Galicia (then part of the Swabian kingdom). But the Visigoths again occupy the Swabian kingdom after a war that began in 573.From 711 the Visigoth kingdom falls into the hands of the Maghreb Muslim army of Tariq ibn Ziyad, commander of the Umayyad Caliphate, emerging the Wilayah of al-Andalus. 756 would be proclaimed the Emirate of Córdoba after an intervention by the Umayyad Abd ar-Rahman I to end the confrontations between Berber and Arab conquerors for possession of the land. Rahman III in 929 proclaimed himself Caliph, creating the caliphate of al-Andalus and Córdoba. Part of Portugal is converted into a Lower Brand Cora: Cora Merida. Despite his character of border military region it had an important economic development. Apparently there was a 808-809 Cora al-Libuxna (Lisbon), the product of an autonomist movement. In 1013, after the dissolution of the Caliphate, a Slavic freedman called Sabur created or United Taifa of Badajoz, which included part of Portugal. This Muslim kingdom was occupied by the Almoravid Empire between 1094 and 1144. Then he fell to the Almohads between 1151 and 1169. After that year the region would be fought by Christians and Muslims. Between 1169 and 1170 it was occupied by the Kingdom of Portugal, to be recovered for the last time by the Almohad musumanes from 1170-1227.The north of present Portugal was the first core counties created in the context of the process of Christian reconquest led by the Kingdoms of Asturias and Leon. In 868 the Asturian leader Vímara Peres conquest Portucale (Oporto), the core of Portucale County. In 878 the noble Galician Hermenegildo Gutierrez begins the conquest and repopulation of Coimbra, emerging county of the same name. In 1071 the county of Portucale was dissolved, becoming integrated into the Kingdom of Galicia. In 1095 King Alfonso VI of Leon conquered the southern region of Galicia and Alto Douro (Trás-os-Montes) creating the Portucalense County, which integrates County Coimbra. Henry of Burgundy is proclaimed as the first count, also adjudging the lands between the Miño and the Tagus that were part of the domains of the Count of Galicia, his cousin Raymond of Burgundy. In 1139, when the then Count Afonso Henriques defeated the Almohads at the Battle of Ourique, the Kingdom of Portugal is proclaimed. Thus the final feudal disengagement with the Kingdom of Leon and Castile, then ruled by the "Emperor" Alfonso VII occurs.
