ARTICLE IN ENGLISH
Portugal is a relatively small country in Europe, and certainly that is one of the smallest in the world. Nor it has a too large population. But his impact on history is relatively astonishing if you consider the above exposed. Is that Portugal came to carve up the world in a famous lawsuit with Spain ... It is not that half the world did not even notice. Portugal actually came to extend their influence directly and indirectly by way world. Besides his style of colonial power would be the inspiration for the colonizing power pattern that happened in the domain of half the world: Britain.Who are these Portuguese? Today maybe a little underrated in Europe very hegemonized by Germany and France (we could add to Britain as third power) actually integrates the sector called, in English, PIGS (Portugal, Ireland, Greece and Spain) those countries considered as second (or fourth) in the European Union.A testament to the importance of Portugal in the world to give those countries with Portuguese as an official language, besides Portuguese course same State. They are: Brazil, Angola, Mozambique, Guinea Bissau, Cape Verde, Sao Tome and Principe and East Timor. But it also speaks Portuguese and variants thereof in Macao (China), Goa (India), Sri Lanka, Equatorial Guinea, Uruguay, Bermuda, Argentina, Venezuela, Canada, USA, South Africa, France, Namibia, Japan, Argentina, Paraguay, Surinam, Guyana, Colombia, Netherlands Antilles, Switzerland, Luxembourg and Andorra. The country with the largest number of descendants of Portuguese in proportion to the rest of the population is undoubtedly Brazil (over 25 million). Perhaps the second would be Uruguay, a country that in its pre and protoestatal stage, became occupied by Portugal and then Brazil. In its beginnings as an independent state something like a third of the Uruguayan national population it was Portuguese and Portuguese-Brazilian origin (among them are the ancestors of the author of this blog). To answer the question of who the Portuguese have to go back very back in time. Indeed the Portuguese are the descendants majority and basically ancient Celts: Lusitanian, conios and oppidanos túrdulos. That is, biological and cultural mix between the Iberians and the Celts. As descendants of Iberian ancestry goes back to the indigenous population of the Iberian Peninsula settled there since the last period of Paleolithic: the Magdalenian. As descendants of Celtic history is linked with that of the invading war bands that arrived in the region around 600 BC and they founded headquarters dominating the local people. Is however necessary to clarify that, by all indications, the language spoken by the ancient Lusitanian and conios Celtic language would not be root but would be closely related to the Italic languages. This means that this language would have been imposed by an Indo-European people who came to the region before the Celts. Nevertheless, the Portuguese themselves later fell under the influence of the Celts or Galician whose heartland is in the current Galicia, Cantabria, Asturias, León and Northern Portugal. The local population was submitted some time by the Carthaginians (236-218 BC); but then came the Romans, who turned the region of present Portugal and neighboring areas (now part of Spain) in the province of Hispania Lusitania. Actually the Romans began their conquest of Lusitania only towards 190 BC, once defeated the Carthaginians after the terrible Second Punic War (218-201 BC) and after finishing the Iberian Revueltas (197-195 BC). But the Portuguese were raised against the Roman power and resisted a long time (between 155 and 139 BC, the year of the murder of rebel leader Viriato) in the Lusitanian wars. However the Portuguese resistance was not overcome until 60 BC after a brutal campaign of two years carried out by the propretor Julius Caesar in front of 20 cohorts (10,000 men) and 5,000 reservists. After these campaigns Rome could address the task of administering the territory, incorporating the locals to their civilization. Olisipo cities (Lisbon), Bracara Augusta (Braga) and Portus Cale (Oporto) were populated mainly by Italian colonists. The Roman era came to an end in 409, arrived in the region when the asdingos Vandals, Alans and Swabians who occupied the Lusitania as federated in Rome. After a conflict that lasted from 419-429 the Swabians, with Roman help, expelled Vandals and Alans creating their own kingdom. The Swabians were a minority of no more than 25,000 people at a local population of some 700,000 souls. His mission was to subdue the foederati Galician-Lusitanian aristocrats and repress peasant revolts (bagaudas) on behalf of Imperio.Sin But his kingdom was eventually occupied by imperial troops visigodas with support in the year 456. In 468 the Swabians, allies with the local aristocracy expelled the Visigoths. During this period of independence (468-585) settlement occurs Breton immigrants off the coast of Galicia (then part of the Swabian kingdom). But the Visigoths again occupy the Swabian kingdom after a war that began in 573.From 711 the Visigoth kingdom falls into the hands of the Maghreb Muslim army of Tariq ibn Ziyad, commander of the Umayyad Caliphate, emerging the Wilayah of al-Andalus. 756 would be proclaimed the Emirate of Córdoba after an intervention by the Umayyad Abd ar-Rahman I to end the confrontations between Berber and Arab conquerors for possession of the land. Rahman III in 929 proclaimed himself Caliph, creating the caliphate of al-Andalus and Córdoba. Part of Portugal is converted into a Lower Brand Cora: Cora Merida. Despite his character of border military region it had an important economic development. Apparently there was a 808-809 Cora al-Libuxna (Lisbon), the product of an autonomist movement. In 1013, after the dissolution of the Caliphate, a Slavic freedman called Sabur created or United Taifa of Badajoz, which included part of Portugal. This Muslim kingdom was occupied by the Almoravid Empire between 1094 and 1144. Then he fell to the Almohads between 1151 and 1169. After that year the region would be fought by Christians and Muslims. Between 1169 and 1170 it was occupied by the Kingdom of Portugal, to be recovered for the last time by the Almohad musumanes from 1170-1227.The north of present Portugal was the first core counties created in the context of the process of Christian reconquest led by the Kingdoms of Asturias and Leon. In 868 the Asturian leader Vímara Peres conquest Portucale (Oporto), the core of Portucale County. In 878 the noble Galician Hermenegildo Gutierrez begins the conquest and repopulation of Coimbra, emerging county of the same name. In 1071 the county of Portucale was dissolved, becoming integrated into the Kingdom of Galicia. In 1095 King Alfonso VI of Leon conquered the southern region of Galicia and Alto Douro (Trás-os-Montes) creating the Portucalense County, which integrates County Coimbra. Henry of Burgundy is proclaimed as the first count, also adjudging the lands between the Miño and the Tagus that were part of the domains of the Count of Galicia, his cousin Raymond of Burgundy. In 1139, when the then Count Afonso Henriques defeated the Almohads at the Battle of Ourique, the Kingdom of Portugal is proclaimed. Thus the final feudal disengagement with the Kingdom of Leon and Castile, then ruled by the "Emperor" Alfonso VII occurs.
